Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is loud, unwashed, uncouth, violent, and has just taken up residence in the garage of a highly dysfunctional family grief stricken over a sudden loss. He’s also the character that makes “Hesher,” Spencer Susser’s feature debut one of the freshest and funniest black comedies to come down the pike in ages.
If you haven‘t already seen “Goodfellas” or “Casino,” don’t worry: Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh has covered them for you in “Kill the Irishman,” a hopelessly derivative yet compulsively watchable retread.
Mumblecore grows up (to a certain aesthetic degree) in “Cold Weather, “Aaron Katz’s latest contribution to the film movement/pseudo genre the Portland trailblazer helped to co-found. The term “mumblecore”—coined by sound editor Eric Masunaga—refers to a group of low budget, independently produced features filmed on location with digital video cameras and under natural light from a script largely improvised by a cast of non-professional actors.

It wasn’t hard picking 10 films for my year-end wrap-up, and were it not for a wealth of outstanding documentaries, this list would be considerably shorter. The greatest gift I can pass on to you during this most joyous holiday season can be found in the following sentence: Stay the hell away from “Tron.”
