Off-duty firefighters arrested for robbery, assault in Normal Heights

ust after 2 a.m. on Feb. 26, two brothers were involved in an altercation with three other men near the corner of Adams Avenue and 34th Street. The three men were off-duty San Diego Fire and Rescue firefighters Capt. Vadid Cisneros, Gregory Econie and Andrew Brennan. The firefighters eventually walked away, but not before allegedly striking one of the brothers on the head, taking their wallets, a cell phone and making a threatening remark.

El Patio Restaurant in Old Town burns out

At 4:20 a.m. on Feb. 20, San Diego Fire and Rescue responded to a call for a structure fire on the 2600 block of San Diego Avenue. Upon arrival, responders found the El Patio restaurant at 2611 San Diego Ave. in flames.

Approximately 30 officers responded and it took approximately 40 minutes to extinguish the fire. While the restaurant is destroyed, there was only roof damage to some neighboring buildings. The two businesses are the Gum Saan antique shop and Captain Finch’s mercantile store. All buildings are within the boundaries of the Old Town Historic State Park.

Arson fire hits University Heights elementary school

A fire at Alice Birney Elementary School at 4345 Campus Ave. marks the fourth arson-related fire in University Heights in less than one month. On Jan. 16, San Diego Fire and Rescue (SDFR) was called to the school for a two-alarm fire.

Though unrelated, a Kingdom Hall for Jehovah’s Witnesses in University Heights experienced three arson attempts, which took place on Dec. 20, 2011, Dec. 30, 2011, and Jan. 3.
