Cooley Museum in University Heights hosts ‘the development of the automobile’

For collector and owner of the J.A. Cooley Museum, Jim Cooley, it’s funny that more people are familiar with his automobile museum from other parts of the world than his University Heights neighbors.

He said it’s been that way for almost 60 years and that his 26-car collection, which includes cars from 1886 through 1933, is a magnetic attraction from afar.

Arson fire hits University Heights elementary school

A fire at Alice Birney Elementary School at 4345 Campus Ave. marks the fourth arson-related fire in University Heights in less than one month. On Jan. 16, San Diego Fire and Rescue (SDFR) was called to the school for a two-alarm fire.

Though unrelated, a Kingdom Hall for Jehovah’s Witnesses in University Heights experienced three arson attempts, which took place on Dec. 20, 2011, Dec. 30, 2011, and Jan. 3.

University Heights Laundromat brings an artsy feel to a daily chore

The family that owns Park Blvd. Laundry at 4209 Park Blvd. was accustomed to a regular schedule until the prospect of owning their own business and working with family lured them into more offbeat hours. “We used to work normal nine-to-five type jobs but wanted more time to raise our three children [and] a relative had a Laundromat which offered more work flexibility and similar income,” said Lee Zucker, one of the owners.

Art and Taste on same day at University Heights fête

University Heights will be the site of a trio of community events on Sept. 12 from noon to 5 p.m.

The Taste of University Heights and the University Heights Arts Open will run concurrently in the neighborhood tucked between Hillcrest and North Park. Local officials will also mark the 100th birthday of the 1910 State Normal School Training Building with comments in front of the structure, located at the Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St
